DiNisco Design is pleased to announce the Angier Elementary School in Newton, MA, has been awarded LEED Gold certification. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a prominent program for buildings that are designed, constructed, and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. The City of Newton’s active participation in the design process demonstrates its strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Angier Elementary School was the oldest school building in Newton still in service as a neighborhood elementary school. The school did not have a cafeteria, nor was it accessible. The mechanical and electrical systems were original and past their useful life, affecting comfort and security as well as teaching and learning. The new school serving 465 students in grades K–5 provides appropriate space, adjacencies, and spatial relationships for Newton’s rigorous educational program. The building’s design responds to the quality of Waban Village, is extremely compact and efficient, yet gracious, capturing beneficial views and solar orientation.
“We are honored to receive the LEED Gold Certification for the Angier Elementary School,” said Donna DiNisco, president of DiNisco Design. “The achievement demonstrates DiNisco Design and its team of consultants’ commitment to sustainability, high quality service, and to build healthy, high performance, green schools.” This project was completed in collaboration with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable, and cost-effective public school facilities.
“Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, DiNisco Design demonstrates their leadership through their LEED certification of Angier Elementary School.”
DiNisco Design achieved LEED Gold certification for the Angier Elementary School by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance for the building. One such example is optimizing energy performance by reducing the energy use by more than 40%. Indoor environmental quality efforts included indoor air quality performance, thermal comfort, daylighting and views.
