Estabrook Elementary School Awarded Prestigious LEED® Silver Green Building Certification
DiNisco Design is pleased to announce the Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington, MA, has been awarded LEED® Silver certification. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a prominent program for buildings that are designed, constructed, and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. The City of Lexington’s active participation in the design process demonstrates its strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
DiNisco Design worked with the Town of Lexington to construct a new 91,840 SF, 540 student, K–5 elementary school on the site of the former school, replacing a single-story, 60,000 SF building. The beautiful 13 acre site abuts conservation land. The school has embraced the conservation land as part of their educational program, called “The Big Backyard.”
DiNisco Design firm president Donna DiNisco commented, “Sustainability is part of what we consciously do for every single project. Green design is crucial to the health and well-being of both students and teachers so as a firm we encourage creative energy efficient solutions as well as an integrative design process. Partnering with a community like Lexington that prioritizes this makes our job much easier because we’re all on the same page.” This project was completed in collaboration with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable, and cost-effective public school facilities.
“LEED is a transformative tool that ensures a building is designed and operating to achieve high performance in key areas of human and environmental health,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “By prioritizing sustainability, DiNisco Design is leading the way in their industry and helping USGBC continue toward our vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation.”
DiNisco Design achieved LEED Silver certification for the Estabrook Elementary School by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance for the building. Special features of the school include a roof garden, a small greenhouse, and an outdoor amphitheater, which are all utilized as a part of the extraordinary curriculum at the school.
