Project Overview

Study • Renovation • Addition

81,450 SF • 480 students • Grades K–5

Construction Dates: July 2017–September 2020

Newton, MA

Design Problem

Built in 1929, the Cabot School needed a renovation and addition that would maintain the character of the existing historic building while providing the necessary spaces to serve its educational program.

Additional Information

The addition responds to the existing building and the surrounding neighborhood character in addition to providing transparency and daylighting. Its massing maximizes the quantity of open space dedicated to outdoor activities.

Design Solution

Three new additions will surround the existing building: a single story library structure, a three story academic wing that matches the existing building’s height, and a two story gym addition can be accessed independently for after-hour activities. All the additions will be separated from the existing building with glass connections that will help distinguish the new construction and emphasize the historic nature of the existing brick building.
