Project Overview

Study • New Construction

110,000 SF • 645 students • Grades K–5

Construction Dates: July 2018–February 2020

Lexington, MA

Design Problem

The original building was opened in October of 1955 with a small addition constructed in 1959. All of the systems in the building are now past their useful life, affecting comfort and security as well as teaching and learning.

Additional Information

The school was closed in 1986 and then reopened in 1995.

Design Solution

The new Maria Hastings Elementary School is being designed to honor and reflect its cultural, linguistic, academic, and economic diversity through better enabling its curriculum, arts, enrichment, and community opportunities. Teams are central to the Hastings School’s collaborative culture, and a spirit of inclusive community is core to the culture of the school. The new building will be constructed near the current building, which will be demolished once the new building is completed.
